Krabi, situated on Thailand’s west coast, is one of those hidden gems that few find in a lifetime. Along the beaches of this sleepy town on the Isthmus of Kra, emerald waters embrace magnificent limestone formations that seem to simply rise out of the center of the earth. These formations, or karsts, contain marine caves and fascinating underwater architecture that beckons snorkelers and scuba divers alike. Coral reefs teeming with life abound on Krabi’s Edenic beaches, such as Koh Lanta and the Phra Nang Peninsula.
With four different national parks, Krabi is determined to preserve and celebrate all of its natural gems for time immemorial. Here, you never have to worry about experiencing over-development, as it is one of Thailand’s purest and most scenic regions. The Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park, which includes the Phra Nang peninsula, revels in isolation and the perfection of its white sand beaches. Phra Nang’s cobalt seascapes, coral sunsets, and peaked mountains of deepest jade amount to nothing less than fairy tale visions.
Also near Krabi town, Koh Lanta, or “dazzling island,” is part of the Mu Koh Lanta National Park. Largest in a group of more than fifty small, mostly uninhabited islands, this place embodies heavenly peace and serenity. From its deserted, white-sand lagoons and beaches abundant with tropical blooms, to its rugged mountains that welcome intrepid explorers, Koh Lanta is the perfect place for those who wish to luxuriate in sea and sun one day, and the next day explore the leafy haunts of Thailand’s “sea gypsies” and pirates of old.
Also in the Koh Lanta area are such entrancing sightseeing spots as Koh Taleng Beng, a perfect birdwatcher’s island, where a limestone tunnel appears at low tide. There are also the five islands of Mu Koh Hah, legendary as a diver’s mecca due to their breathtaking coral gardens. Although Krabi town itself is wonderfully quiet, and its surrounding beaches absolutely define the meaning of “unspoiled,” there are still innumerable high-end restaurants throughout the region. Rumored to have more restaurants per capita than any other country in the world, Thailand is considered a gourmand’s paradise. If that is the case, then Krabi is nothing less than a little piece of heaven.
