Travel Insurance on the International Level
When travelling overseas, the list of potential misadventures and accidents that can befall a traveller is endless. Between language differences, cultural misunderstandings, and the potential for items to be lost or stolen, international travel can be very hazardous. It’s a good thing that international travel insurance is there to give travellers the peace of mind that makes every trip comfortable and secure. Access to emergency assistance is also crucial on any international trip. Various different types of insurance offer a broad spectrum of coverage for these unusual situations and the expenses that arise from them. Be sure to purchase the appropriate insurance for your needs and to carefully read the product disclosure statement when you do so. Do not hesitate to consult an expert in travel insurance or to speak at length to a customer service representative at your insurance company. A full understanding of the exclusions and limitations of your insurance is paramount.
In Case of Emergency
It is a great comfort for any traveller to know that he or she is covered in the event of any emergency that may arise. Most policies give travellers a phone number, accessible from any land line or mobile network throughout the world, which ensures personal customer assistance when most needed. The inclusions for emergency care will vary from policy to policy, but they tend to include the following:
- Coverage for hospital bills and other medical expenses
- Provision of interpreters in non-English-speaking hospitals around the world
- Payment for Australian repatriation expenses in the case of illness or accident
- Passport and other document replacement in the case of loss or theft
- Lost ticket replacement
- Emergency funds transfer facilitation in the event of such a need
- Facilitation for the rescheduling of interrupted travel plans
(All the above subject to T &C's of the PDS not all situations are covered)
Medical Benefits
Outside of Australia, Medicare is frequently unavailable to stranded or injured Australians. Private health insurance may not provide coverage either, which is why international travel insurance is so important for anyone from business men and women who travel frequently to families that take the occasional international holiday. With some types of international travel insurance, coverage is unlimited for any medical or hospital expenses including transportation, evacuation, hospital stays, surgery, and doctor’s appointments. Some policies do have limits in this regard, however, so be sure to carefully read your policy and ask questions about any detail you do not understand. Knowing the medical procedures covered by your insurance will give you immense peace of mind when travelling internationally.
Luggage Loss or Theft
Statistics show that international travel is more prone to the loss of luggage than any other type of travel. Also, the bigger and more exotic the trip, the more likely travellers are to bring along cameras, video recorders, laptop computers, and other electronic items handy for recording and cataloguing their adventures. International travel insurance gives you the assurance that these items will be replaced in the event of loss or theft. There are maximum amounts, however, in terms of the value of luggage, so be sure to know what these are when you purchase your insurance, and be sure to purchase adequate coverage for your personal items.
Fees and Deposits
When travellers book flights and accommodation, or even cruises and international tours, a deposit is typically required, and often it is non-refundable. In many cases, international travel insurance will cover the traveller in the case of lost deposits or cancellation fees when he or she must cancel the trip. Product disclosure statements will enumerate exactly what benefits are available in these cases, so be sure to read them carefully.
