No one knows how King Rama VII discovered Hua Hin one hundred years ago, but as soon as he did, he made the idyllic fishing village, and its paradise beach, his summer getaway. With its newfound royal caché, secluded Hua Hin soon became the ultimate destination for local aristocrats wishing to escape from the busy city. When the rail line came to Hua Hin, making it just a three-hour trip from Bangkok, the sleepy town became even more lively. So, unlike the other Thai beaches that are famed as international tourist hot spots, Hua Hin is still a favorite of the Thai people themselves.

The royal pedigree thrives in the stunning Siamese architecture of Hua Hin’s Railway station, with its dollhouse-like Royal Waiting Room, as well as in the stately old homes at the north and south ends of the gently curving beach. Hua Hin’s many temples and their large, meditating Buddha statues are a uniquely Thai attraction that fascinates photographers almost as much as its lovely coastline. Hua Hin also boasts the highest density of world-class golf courses anywhere in Thailand.

A perfect place to retreat from the excessive night life found at some beach resorts, Hua Hin is quiet and romantic: a lovely location for leisurely walks through quaint winding streets. It is great fun to watch fishing boats come in with their nets full, and then to sample that ultra-fresh  catch in one of the restaurants set upon stilts over the turquoise ocean. In your Hua Hin adventures, try everything from luxurious, candle-lit, pier-side restaurants to tiny stalls in the lively night market, if you want to really taste Thailand.

Hua Hin’s royal residence, Klai Klangwon, or “Far from Worries” is a breathtaking 1928 structure, partially open for visitor tours. It is the full-time residence of Thailand’s current king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, who is the world’s longest reigning current monarch. Because of his presence in Hua Hin, the navy and police are on constant guard duty, so Hua Hin is considered an especially safe place to visit. Whether you are coming to stroll the beaches or indulge in lively watersports, Hua Hin is a true beach-lover’s paradise, where one can disappear from modern cares, yet eat like the ultimate gourmand.
