Believe it or not, Grand Baie was once a sleeping fishing and sugar-producing village that carefully kept the secret of its perfect, sheltered bay. But today, Grand Baie stands as the premier tourist hub in Mauritius. An international mix of people shares in the beauty of its panoramic vistas, warm coves, and exciting attractions. Whether you love to wind surf, jet ski, go dolphin-sighting, or sail, Grand Baie is a mecca for island opportunities and the main gateway for cruises to the islands in the north.

Hip and happening, Grand Baie is a treasure trove of colourful shops and craft stores, where visitors can purchase anything from souvenirs to gourmet cuisine. Restaurants and bars are plentiful as are night clubs and chic boutiques, in fact, it is the only resort town in Mauritius that offers such an array of independently owned bars and restaurants.  The resort offerings here are many and varied, as are the water sports. The bay itself is perfectly sited for sailing, wind surfing, water skiing, and the launching of luxury cruises. Deep sea fishing trips also leave from Grand Baie, as they go in search of elusive blue marlin, shark, and tuna.

The beach at Grand Baie is a broad and magnificent swath of perfect, snow-white sand; however, because the bay is such a perfect harbour for boats of all kinds, colours, and descriptions, its beach is more perfect for photography than swimming. Swimming is better pursued at neighbouring beaches, such as Mont Choisy, Perebere, and Trou aux Biches. The calm, clear, bathtub-warm waters in these serene enclaves will delight you endlessly, no matter whether you wish to sip cocktails beneath the shade trees or head out onto the waves for some body surfing.

Known as the Monte Carlo of Mauritius, Grand Baie is far more exciting than the nearby capital of Port Louis. Here you can find everything from Chinese to Indo-Mauritian to Creole to Italian food. But don't expect a quick meal. Two course lunches and three course dinners will become standard as you relax into island time. Grand Baie is a perfect place to leave the rest of the world behind and simply indulge your senses with fun, food, and fantastic scenery. Gorgeous old plantation homes and rustic fishing boats will both enchant you here, and a drive along the coastal highway will give you plenty of unforgettable scenery to photograph and dream about for years to come.

You can also spend time exploring the local markets to get a taste of true Mauritian flavour, or even visit the ruins of an old Grand Baie lighthouse. With a practically infinite number of water sports available for daily entertainment and an equally infinite number of restaurants and clubs beckoning to you in the evening, there is never a dull moment in thrilling Grand Baie—the Monte Carlo of Mauritius.
