On Fiji’s legendary Viti Levu island, wend your way down Queen’s Highway. You’ll pass panoramic sugar cane plantations and misty rain-forested regions, until you find yourself on the enchanted Coral Coast. The region’s Natadola Bay is a perfect place to settle--a storybook landscape if ever there was one.  As the chalk-white beaches are kissed by gently lapping waves, their edges are shaded by tall palms that reach eagerly for the sun. Both swimming in the shallow lagoon and snorkeling in the coral reef’s depths are perfect ways to take advantage of the Coral Coast’s refreshing, clear waters. Then throw on a wrap and enjoy strolling lush tropical gardens, horseback riding along the beach, playing championship golf, or dining in one of Fiji’s exceptional gourmet restaurants. Now that you are at home on the Coral Coast, it is time to explore.

The Coral Coast’s famous Sigatoka Sand Dunes are infinitely romantic, with their magnificent expanse and shifting landscape. They bring out the kid in you, as it is impossible not to want to dash up the haunting bare hills, then run or roll back down again into nature’s embrace. Another exciting day trip is the Coral Coast’s Tavuni Hill Fort. This historic fort was the sight of a great deal of fighting among ancient peoples and contains such thrilling features as high rock walls, booby traps, moats, and a killing stone where cannibals made their sacrifices. The Coral Coast’s turbulent past is all the more fascinating when one considers how very peaceful the region is today, with its world-class scuba diving, thrilling surf spots, and even opportunities to watch the migration of humpbacked whales.

In the Tavuni area, you may also view traditional Fijian homes and observe the placid, communal lifestyle of today’s Fijian culture. Also, enjoy a delicious lovo meal--nothing says Coral Coast like this traditional food, cooked in an underground oven. If island history fascinates you, visit the Vuda Historical Site or simply recline on the crescent beach at Natadola Bay, contemplating the journeys of the Coral Coast’s early explorers. As a modern-day adventurer, what treasures will you unearth? Whether you take home a perfect conch shell found at low tide or the greater treasure of a new inner serenity, you are assured to leave this magical place with memories and keepsakes galore.
